artist statement
I am a printmaker and painter who combines my deep love for the fantastical side of nature, context from folklore, and my lived experience of disability to create personal mythologies.
I can wind myself into the bark of a tree as it adapts to grow around a fence, mumble in conversation with the buzz of an electricity pylon as it looms solitary in a field, a field where I can become dancing partners with the grass as it flows in the wind. In nature I can exist in a slow-fast-changing space, in crip time.
Folklore and myths of the area can act as a starting point, which I reimagine by compulsively drawing and redrawing them until a fragment is revealed. I then often intertwine materiality from sites of interest into the work as I believe that materials have an innate meaning (Donna Haraway’s theory of material semiotics, 1985). Context can be evidenced through soil texturizing a canvas, or woven plants that frame a print.
I am a Co-Director of Rotten Crip Collective. We run workshops and teach-ins for other disabled people on the intersection of crip theory, disability justice and art making.
